Welcome to Southern Edge Forge
About my knives: All my knives are made from start to finish here on Bruny Island Tasmania, without ever leaving the workshop until they find a new owner. I make all my sheaths myself from high quality veg tanned leather. I also self source and stabilize many of my natural handle materials.
My work leans towards a more rustic style using techniques such as Japanese Tsuchime and variations of it. I aim to never sell a knife that I gave less than my best at the time of creation, with the vision that my best knives will become others best knives as well.
How it all started: Southern Edge Forge began from an appreciation of swords and medieval combat. At a young age I enjoyed anything from reading medieval style fantasies to playing video games like For Honour, Sekiro, and MB2 Bannerlord. Anything with swords, daggers, or other bladed weaponry always seemed to draw my interest.
In grade 7 of Highschool I undertook a metalwork class where I learnt the basics of forging. This, along with watching videos of talented blade smiths creating beautifully crafted swords, knives and other blades inspired me to further pursue the craft.
At age 17 I forged my first knife with minimal equipment and skills to speak of. Since then I have slowly acquired more tools and learnt from many mistakes and flawed knives. It was in spring 2024 when I really started getting somewhere and had crafted blades that I was happy with.
Further down the line with many more hours behind me there was a point that everything clicked and I found my style. From that point onwards there were so many more possibilities that I was designing knives in my head weeks ahead of time. I found myself finishing one knife just so I could start the next one. I’ve still got a lot to learn and constantly challenge myself, trying new processes on each knife so I finish each one with more skills than I started with.
